Prince george-icefield parkway - calgary in english

hello everybody,

This part is about the NP in Jasper and Banff.
Total cycling distance is now 7930km.

On thursday, augsut 28, i left Prince George and after an easy day i reached a good rest area with tenting possibilties. A local person had told me about it. Here i met Sarah and Olivier, 2 cyclist from Quebec who were allready camping here. We couldnot talk much because soon after i arrived it rained again. In the morning it was the same story. Olivier has been cycling for 3 months just like me and Sarah joines him now for a some weeks. Olivier has one bath experience with a bear. It came to his tent at night and did bite it but when Olivier woke up and made some noice the bear went away. I saw the holes in his tent and was very impressed.

The next day we had to endure a storm. Sarah and Olivier did find some shelter but i was low on food and had to go on.In Mc Bride we met again and here they told me that they had also a flat tyre.

Sarah and Olivier, it was nice to meet you and i hope you have a good trip from now on.

On saturday, i reached Jasper but was disappointed in the very touristic town. I longed for a pub with some live music but couldnot find it. The hostel was outside the town and had no place for me. So i put my tent up in the woods.

The next morning a local person saw and warned me that it was a 500 dollar fine for camping outside camogrounds. When we were talking we saw a wolf passing by.
Cycling into town i met Colin, another Canadian cyclist from Montreal, whoes aim is to reach the pacific ocean but he makes a detour now to see the beautiful NP here.
Between Jasper and Banff lies the very scenic icefield parkway where there are no trucks allowed. Unfortunally they allow big RV and in this long weekend with labourday there are lots of them.

I took the old HW to have less traffic but that did fail completly. I did see a black beer but have lost the count of how many i allready saw.

On the Athabasca falls i met Uli and Vera again. These are the 2 german cyclists i met before on Kenai peninsula and in Denlli NP. I was very happy to see them.
They are sick and tired of the bad weather and are now renting a car for a week. That is way they are here.

In the late afternoon i decide to cycle to a campground before the next pass but my infromation is wrong and the campground is near the top. Off course i need now much more time to reach it and i arrive in the dark. The altitude here is allmost 2000m and today i is the first day there was some snow.

In the kitchen shelter has a groupe a fire going on and i join them for a while. They are local guides for a group of british sodiers here on a highmountain training.
In the morning we cook together and because it is there last day i can take some leftovers from them.

This monday is a good day. It is the first day in a long time i dont have any rain and i see wonderfull beautifull things like Peyto lake. In my opinion more beautifull than the famous Lake Louise which i see the next day. I must admit with a whole lot of tourists and cars and under a clouded sky it is a bit different.

I meet Colin again and together we cycle to a hostel. Here there is a sauna and we enjoy it very much. The days on this altitude are allready cold so a sauna is an great thing to have.

On tuesday, september 2, Colin and i split for a while to meet again in Banff hostel. I visited lake Morraine because a friend told me it was beautifull. It is but they are also a lot of tourists there.
In the evening i take part of a pooltornament and can win a game but loose my second won.

On wednesday Colin and i cycle together to Calgary. It starts very fine with sunny weather and a good tailwind. Because we are coming out of the rocky mountains there is a lot of downhill and are average for the first 60km is 24km/h.

Than it start to rain and we even have some hail. In the mids of the hail Colin gets a flat tyre but luckely we can shelter at a gasstation.
We reach Calgary where Colin wants to stay with a friend but because we are early and she didnot reply his mail he has no place to stay. My host from warmshowers is very understanding and Colin can stay with him aswell.

On thursday Colin goes to his friend and we say goodbye.
In the evening i go to a meeting wich is very good but ends badly when my bicycle got stolen.
The next day i file a rapport at the police station and go searching on my own and after a few hours find my bike.

That evening i go to a pub to see some live music but there is no country music as they told me but hardrock. It is not good and so we go to the bar and have some beers, It was a fun night and i thank you for it Brad and Greg. Thanks again.

Tomorrow i leave Calgary to cycle to Yellowstone if the weather lets me to. I can be cold there this time of year.

Yo Nico,

Yo Nico,

Miserie, miserie man!
